I have 16 SUA2200RM2U UPS’s that used to be connected to 1996 vintage Windows 2000 computers running an unknown version of PowerChute PE. It is a serial port connection running through an A9830 UPS Remote Shutoff Device. Also installed is an AP9610 Relay I/O Module.
Now my issue is an upgrade to new computer hardware running Windows 10. The new computer does have a serial port and I would still like to use that so I don’t have to upgrade the accessories to use USB. An outside contractor did the computer upgrade but never installed anything for the APC connection. I’ve tried numerous versions of the PE software from the download site, but so far haven’t been able to get past the required .NET 2.0 warning even though .NET 4.7.1 is installed which Microsoft says is backwards compatible.
What I need to know is what PowerChute Software do I need to make the equipment work again? This shouldn’t be this hard.
PowerChute Personal Edition is compatible with Back-UPS not SUA Smart-UPS. The version of PowerChute for a SUA Smart-UPS is PowerChute Business Edition. PowerChute Business Edition with communicate with a SUA either serially or via USB.

I recommend you download and read the User's Guide. For your unit you will need User's Guide for type B Smart-UPS. The User's Guide will be found under Manuals and Warranties.
Thanks Bill. That installed a lot better. The install is not able to locate the UPS however, but I'm suspecting that it's the hardware. I'm inclined to think the DB-9 port on the back of the computer is USB emulated and the UPS isn't liking that, but I'll have to research that a bit more. Unfortunately we weren't given the hardware configuration for these new computers so I'm going to have to crack a cover and take a look inside.
I gave up trying to get the DB-9 serial port to work for now since the computer does recognize the UPS when connected with the USB cable and it installs the Agent. However, there are multiple issues. What I have installed is:
If I try connecting locally as the manual describes, I get an error
Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to localhost:6547
Can not communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s)
(Error code ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap)
The service appears to to be installed but when I try to restart it I get an error message from the APC PBE Agent:
Everything was installed and run signed in as Administrator. I'm not familiar enough with PowerChute to know what the issue is. Some help would be much appreciated,
If you want to use the Serial cable with the SUA you need cable 940-0024. The cable must be connected to the computer and the UPS when PowerChute is installed. If you have install PowerChute previously using USB you must uninstall PowerChute, brain dead the SUA (see Schneider Electric FAQ FA156611) then install with the cable attached.
As for Firefox, that is a really old version. Firefox is now distributing version 60. Being such an old version may explain why you are seeing the SSL errors.
If after a clean install you still see the service control dispatch error open the control panel go to Administrative Tools, Services, and open APC PBE Agent. change the Startup type form Automatic to Automatic (delayed Start) and then reboot the system.
