Yes, The BE550G does have an overload protection circuit which will sense when too much power is being drawn from a device or devices plugged into an outlet marked "Battery Backup + Surge Protection."
When using the UPS selector, it will base the load on the total amount of power capable of being drawn by the piece of equipment that you select. This is often more than the nominal power draw that you would read with multimeter. The maximum load must be accounted for when sizing a UPS so that any inrush does not overload the UPS and possibly drop the load.
